Professional Development for Teachers

The Kentucky Center offers two different Professional Development training seminars for teachers in the summer: Arts Academies and the Kentucky Institute for Arts in Education. Both of these programs are described below with links to online applications.

Arts Academies
The Kentucky Center, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, provides one-week Arts Academies for Kentucky’s public school teachers at six sites across the Commonwealth each summer. Teachers are paid a stipend to attend, and they receive training from professional artists in two art forms (music and dance, or drama and visual arts). Teachers also receive the latest versions of the KET Arts Toolkits for their schools. All instruction is closely tied to Kentucky Core Content and Program of Studies. The 2007 Arts Academies will take place in June:

  • June 11 - 15: Winchester - Music and Dance
  • June 11 - 15: Princeton - Visual Art and Drama
  • June 18 - 22: Bowling Green – Music and Dance
  • June 18 - 22: Somerset – Visual Art and Drama
  • June 25 - 29: Prestonsburg – Music and Dance
  • June 25 - 29: Hebron - Visual Art and Drama

The deadline to apply for the Arts Academies (April 1st ) has passed and we are not accepting late applications. We are still taking applications for the Kentucky Institute for Arts in Education (scroll down for more information).

2007 Kentucky Institute for Arts in Education
Presented in partnership with the University of Louisville and Jefferson County Public Schools. Open to all teachers (public or private).

The Kentucky Institute for Arts in Education (KIAE) is a two-week professional development seminar for teachers designed to involve participants in hands-on dance, drama, music, and visual arts. KIAE participants develop an awareness of how to integrate the arts across the curriculum, explore their own creative potential in the arts and create works of art in a variety of disciplines.

Professional Artists who have worked in educational settings serve as faculty for the Institute. In addition to the outstanding faculty, speakers and consultants provide information on local and regional cultural resources, curriculum development and integration of the arts as prescribed by Kentucky school reform. An arts-infused field trip using all four art forms occurs on the fifth day of the Institute, providing an exciting look at how to integrate the arts as tools for learning.

Location: The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts (Fifth and Main Streets in downtown Louisville).

Dates: July 9-20 • 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm • Monday through Friday
